Glenview, IL (November 29, 2007) - The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) is proud to announce that NASGRASS - The North American Society of Grass Racers And Sod Slingers www.nasgrass.com has become the first USLMRA Affiliated Club and will join with the Florida Lawn Racing Association (FLA), a USLMRA Local Chapter www.floridalawnracing.net , in a strategic alliance that will expand America's fastest mowing sport across the Sunshine State and beyond.
Founded in Naples, Florida in 1985 and now based in LaBelle, Florida, NASGRASS is one of the nation's oldest locally organized lawn mower racing group and has had more than 100 members. In 1994 NASGRASS came to LaBelle, Florida to race at the Rodeo arena, and in 1996 had the first event during the LaBelle Swamp Cabbage Festival. With seven tracks located in LaBelle, Palmdale, Muse, Lehigh Acres, Sebring, Punta Gorda, and Arcadia Florida, NASGRASS sanctions ten (10) events each year. NASGRASS prides itself on raising funds for worthy causes such as accident and disaster victims in the Collier, Lee, Hendry and Desoto County Florida areas.
"We are excited about this next chapter in our history," said NASGRASS president Sid Whiteside. "With NASGRASS under the USLMRA umbrella, we can capitalize on the wealth of knowledge, experience and resources of the USLMRA while remaining autonomous and keeping our long-established build and technical rules. I'd like to thank Tom Ast, FLA President (and USLMRA 2006 Most Improved Driver). We have worked together very well since he took the FLA Presidency. Tom has always welcomed any NASGRASS member that came to an FLA event, and has always looked their mowers over to let them know if any changes needed to be made in a courteous manner. I'd also like to thank the NASGRASS Board of Directors for their ongoing support.
The NASGRASS Board of Directors are all USLMRA/FLA members, and has led the way to making this merger possible."
"This is a win-win situation, said Tom Ast, FLA President. "Membership in both groups will expand, racers will enjoy new competition and we'll have mow fun!" The FLA races at its' home track, the MowerPlex in Avon Park Florida each September - May.
The U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association is the nation's oldest and largest national lawn mower racing sanctioning body, pioneering American lawn mower racing in 1992. The USLMRA hosts the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series that crowns national champions in six classes and sanctions a network of 20 Local Chapters that host more than 100 races each year. Racers compete on riding lawn mowers with all cutting blades removed at speeds up to 60 mph. Racers compete for points, trophies and bragging rights. There are no cash prizes in USLMRA lawn mower racing, which keeps the sport inexpensive and fun.
The USLMRA Affiliated Club program allows a group of racers to race safely and locally while following USLMRA build and tech rules in a flexible, non-binding manner. Affiliated Clubs are designed for groups of racers wishing to race locally on a home track, race tracks wishing to host sanctioned USLMRA events, venues seeking weekly or monthly races, groups wishing to get into lawn mower racing with the goal of becoming a USLMRA Local Chapter. Affiliated Clubs are fully insured and follow USLMRA safety rules.
The USLMRA is televised on the Outdoor Channel and Speed Channel and has been featured on ESPN2, the Discovery Channel and the TV sitcom, "Home Improvement," as well as in the New York Times, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, the Wall Street Journal and The Paul Harvey Radio Network
